My story
My path to becoming a commercialization advisor wasn’t a straight line. It was forged through firsthand experience as both an inventor and a founder, navigating the distinct challenges of hardware, software, and the complex world of funding.
Part 1: The inventor and founder
I didn't learn commercialization from a textbook; I lived it. As an inventor on 20+ patents and the founder of companies like CareBand, I navigated the entire journey from a patent sketch to an award-winning hardware product. I learned firsthand what it takes to build a defensible IP moat and lead a team through the challenges of bringing a complex idea to market.
Part 2: The funding expert
Through my own ventures, I discovered the transformative power of non-dilutive funding. I mastered the complex process of writing and winning SBIR/NIH grants, which became a critical lifeline for development. This experience as both an applicant and now as an official grant reviewer gives me a unique, 360-degree perspective on what it truly takes to secure funding.
Part 3: The advisor
My journey as an inventor and founder showed me the immense challenges of bringing an idea to life. But it also revealed a deeper need: the isolation and mental hurdles that every founder faces. That’s why I founded Founders Therapy, a Chicago-based community of over 300 entrepreneurs dedicated to supporting one another.
My work as an advisor is the culmination of all these experiences. I combine the strategic, battle-tested playbook from my own ventures with the deep empathy I’ve gained from the founder community.
